Sam Gucwa is a saxophonist and woodwind doubler known for her bold bandleading and inventive solos across genres. Beginning her professional career after moving to Denver in 2020, Gucwa played as a big band saxophonist with the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra (Colorado) and the Dean Bushnell Orchestra (Colorado) on every reed part. She performed in trombonist Stafford Hunter’s Young Lions residency series, and currently plays reed 2 in MSU’s Be-bop Spartans Jazz Orchestra I as well as bari in Jazz Orchestra II.
Beyond the jazz tradition, Gucwa has performed with the Boulder Philharmonic on baritone saxophone and recorded as PureArtistMusic’s studio woodwind while living in Denver. She’s been featured as a guest artist for Brian Vander Ark, bandleader of the Verve Pipe and proud Michigan native. She arranged and coordinated live instrumentation for indie rock band Bleak Mystique and helped them win the University of Denver’s Battle of the Bands. Gucwa now performs mainly in Michigan while she completes her Bachelor of Music degree at Michigan State University. She plays reed 2 with Rodney Whitaker’s Gathering Orchestra and regularly performs with bass trombonist Chris Glassman. She is currently studying under tenor saxophonist Walter Blanding. Her debut album is set to release in early 2024. |
Sunday, July 7 • molly • happy Valley Stage
Molly is an award-winning singer, song-writer, and performing musician with a history of many projects and collaborations based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. As she grows as an artist, she writes to explore the truths and constructed realities of what it means to be alive as a black woman in America by navigating old and new territories through sound and space. Her unique past and desire for a sense of absolute freedom not only inform her emotive style of singing but also narrate her thought-provoking lyrics, making for a moody, eclectic, colorful, and soulful mixture of profound sound.
On stage, she is joined by her husband and multi-instrumentalist Scott Schultz, concocting a mix of joyful and contemplative music drawn as much from the real world as their varied record collection. Molly will soon be releasing her deeply personal debut LP. She currently has her debut EP and video for lead single ‘Shine’ available everywhere and recently released a video for her song ‘Don’t Be Surprised’ on YouTube (below) & Bandcamp. |
